Radiant Light Amazonas

The immensity and lush primal beauty of the Amazon overwhelms even the seasoned traveler. To evoke a sense of the magnitude of the Amazon and the emotional impact it has on those who venture there, I choose to print small, jewel-like images isolated in large, vibrant, light-painted color fields, rather than normal color prints that only show what the camera recorded.

In each 20"x16" print I combine a small full-frame enlargement of a camera image with a 'light painted' color-field which surrounds the camera image. Ilfochrome Classic Deluxe glossy direct positive color paper is used because of its permanence, brilliant saturated colors and high gloss finish, which makes the prints radiate with a feeling similar to that of raw light. The light painting often involves the mixing of several colors and is done by hand, in total darkness, and is impossible to duplicate exactly.

Due to the variable nature of this unique printmaking process, the images are made in an edition of ten light painted variations of each camera image.
